Revaia has made its most explicit move yet into climate finance, naming Marc-Étienne Mercadier as partner to co-lead the firm's first dedicated energy transition fund. The appointment, announced Monday, pairs Mercadier with Jean-Patrice Bellier, who joined the Paris-based growth investor in late 2025 with a similar mandate. Together they are tasked with building the investment team and deploying a strategy that spans decarbonisation, resource efficiency, resilience and the broader energy transition.

A software investor turns to hard assets

Revaia's portfolio reads like a roll-call of European B2B software success stories: Aircall, Deepki, Frontify, Mews, Sekoia.io, Synera. The firm has built its reputation on growth equity for technology companies, typically writing cheques of €10 million to €50 million into businesses with proven product-market fit. Energy transition represents a departure. The sector demands fluency in project finance, regulatory risk, commodity exposure and long-dated capital structures, skills not usually found on a SaaS cap table.

Mercadier brings precisely that background. At Eiffel Investment Group he created and led the Eiffel Gaz Vert fund from 2020, deploying more than €500 million of equity across renewable energy, decarbonisation and energy-efficiency investments throughout Europe. His experience spans private equity, infrastructure and structured finance, with board seats at high-growth companies and involvement in five fundraisings. Before Eiffel, he helped industrialise the independent power producer model at Générale du Solaire. The hire signals Revaia intends to play across the capital structure, not just take minority equity stakes.

Complementary backgrounds, shared mandate

Bellier's path differs. His roughly 15 years in energy and climate have been largely advisory, working with European industry leaders on decarbonisation and growth strategies. Mercadier has lived on the principal side, underwriting assets, structuring vehicles and sitting on investment committees. The combination suggests Revaia wants both the strategic relationships that open doors in heavy industry and the technical capacity to price risk in nascent technologies. Alice Albizzati and Elina Berrebi, Revaia's founding partners, described the pair as giving the debut fund "exactly the leadership it needs" to seize what they call a landmark investment opportunity: scaling the businesses that will decarbonise Europe's economy while strengthening its energy independence.

That framing, energy independence alongside decarbonisation, has become the dominant political narrative in Brussels and national capitals since 2022. The European Commission's REPowerEU plan and the Net Zero Industry Act have directed public funding and regulatory support toward domestic clean technology manufacturing and deployment. Private capital is expected to follow. The International Energy Agency estimates that annual clean energy investment must more than triple by 2030 to meet net zero goals, with Europe accounting for a significant share. IEA's World Energy Investment 2024 report puts global clean energy spending at roughly $2 trillion in 2024, still far short of what modelled pathways require.

The growth equity gap in European climate tech

Where Revaia sees an opening is in the growth stage, companies that have de-risked their technology but need capital to build factories, hire sales teams and expand across European markets. This is the valley of death where many climate startups stall: too capital-intensive for traditional venture funds, too early or too small for infrastructure investors who prefer contracted cash flows. Mercadier's background in structured equity and debt is relevant here. Growth-stage climate companies increasingly require hybrid instruments, revenue-based financing, convertible facilities, offtake-backed structures, that sit between pure equity and project finance.

Revaia's existing portfolio offers a hint of where the overlap lies. Deepki provides energy performance analytics for real estate portfolios. Ampeco operates EV charging management software. These are software businesses serving the energy transition. The new fund will likely back more of them, but also companies building physical assets: battery storage, green hydrogen, industrial heat pumps, circular materials. The challenge is constructing a single fund strategy that accommodates both asset-light software margins and asset-heavy project economics without confusing limited partners.

Fundraising in a crowded market

The European climate fund landscape has crowded rapidly. Dedicated energy transition vehicles have launched from established infrastructure managers (Antin, Ardian, Cube), venture firms (World Fund, Lowercarbon) and new platforms (2150, Pale Blue Dot). Limited partners are allocating, but they are also consolidating. A debut fund from a growth equity house without a climate track record faces scrutiny. Mercadier's €500 million deployment at Eiffel Gaz Vert is the primary evidence of execution capability. Bellier's advisory network provides deal flow credibility. The fund size has not been disclosed; Revaia's previous funds have targeted €300-500 million ranges.

Mercadier noted that growth private equity is "uniquely positioned" to provide high-impact companies with scaling capital while supporting European decarbonisation targets and industrial sovereignty. The sovereignty argument resonates with institutional allocators, particularly French and German pension funds and insurers under pressure to align portfolios with EU taxonomy and national climate laws. But it also raises questions: will the fund prioritise European-headquartered companies? Will it invest in supply chains that originate outside the EU? Revaia's North American presence suggests a transatlantic lens, but the political rhetoric points inward.
