Under the 45-metre dome of the Grand Palais in Paris, Emmanuel Macron staged what he intended as a European breakthrough. More than 2,000 representatives from politics, the military, industry and research gathered for a Franco-German summit on space. The French president's message was direct: Europe's space sector is fragile, and the continent must move faster.
The ambition is clear enough. To compete with the United States and China, Europe must bundle its industrial and technological capacities. The summit set a target of achieving independent European manned spaceflight within ten years. Yet the question of how Europe should concretely become more independent in space remains a source of conflict between the continent's two largest economies.
Billions invested, strategy missing
Europe has poured billions of euros into space programmes over the past two decades. The European Space Agency operates successful launch vehicles and satellite systems. Galileo provides European navigation independence from American GPS. Copernicus delivers Earth observation data used across government and commercial sectors.
